Are your changes falling short or landing you with personal grievances?

From time to time changes may be required to the structure of a business such as the number of employees, the types of jobs and the distribution of work across the jobs. Changes that are poorly managed have a dramatic impact on productivity as people become consumed with the change being introduced, more people begin taking sick days or not showing up for work, and valued employees leave.

Over two-thirds of changes fail leaving employees cynical and burned out and resistant to future change. Employees begin arguing about change and the direction of the company, people are left to wonder why the change is happening, and in extreme situations, changes are scrapped altogether due to the lack of support.

Many employers trip up over the processes involved in restructuring and this can end up costing them dearly. Between January and November 2009, more than 900 personal grievances due to redundancy were taken either to mediation or the Employment Relations Authority, twice as many as the previous year. The average payout in Wellington was $6,474.
